Guest speakers & notices

Guest speakers will include organisations and personnel that reflect the information obtained from student interviews. The outcomes are consistent with Overall Aims no's 1, 2 & 4.

Students will be able to:

  1. Examine and explore vocation interests.
  2. Receive assistance and support in the preparation of scholarship, cadetship and university special entry schemes.
  3. Discuss other career issues of relevance.

The following activities are consistent with role statement no's 4, 5, 8 & 9. A program of invited guest speakers will be developed. 

These could include:

  • University and TAFE representatives
  • Private education and training providers
  • Large employers e.g. ADF, Police Service, Public Service etc
  • Industry representatives e.g. accountants, engineers, legal & health professionals etc
  • ATO, re HECS requirements
  • International educational exchange programs
  • Ex-students.

A record of guest speakers will be maintained and included in student bulletins and a ‘calendar of events'.

Responsibilities

The Career Adviser will be responsible for organising a guest speaker program consistent with student needs and speaker availability.

Timelines

The timings of guest speakers will be determined by student needs. Generally most relevant speakers will be organised during Terms 2 & 3.

Bulletins & notices

A Careers Reference Centre will be maintained and will be available for student use before, during and after school. Career Bulletins, TORCH articles, regular notices in the ‘day sheet', e-mails to parents and careers intranet site will be used to disseminate career information. The listed outcomes are consistent with Overall Aims no's 1, 2 & 4 and Components of Action no's 5, 6, 7 & 9.

Outcomes

Students will be able to:

  • Access and locate relevant career information
  • Receive regular careers bulletins.

Parents and care givers will be able to:

  • Access and locate relevant career information most suitable to their daughter or ward
  • Read regular and relevant careers articles contained in TORCH.

A record of notices, articles etc will be kept.

Careers Reference Centre

Will contain, but is not limited to:

  • University pamphlets and guides
  • Information on specific careers
  • Information on cadetships and scholarships
  • Interstate and international exchange and educational opportunities
  • Private education providers
  • TAFE
  • Past UAC booklets
  • Study assistance guides
  • UAI and university entrance information.

Responsibilities

The Careers Adviser will be responsible for the maintenance of the Careers Reference Centre and organising a regular careers bulletins and notices consistent with student and school community needs.

Assessment guidelines and indicators of success

  • Regular publication of Careers Bulletins at least 2 per term or as needed
  • Regular articles submitted in TORCH, at least two per term or as needed
  • Notices contained on careers notice board.
